GBR9122 Riot

Currently owned by Adam and Kathy Mercieca, who kindly supplied the following details and pictures

RIOT is currently berthed at cardiff bay yacht club. She was at ancastas brokerage in darthmouth when I bought her 3 years ago. I always wanted an OOD 34 having grown up sailing my fathers contessa 25 which is a doug peterson 1/4 tonner in the same vein as the OOD.

I had her ashore for 18 months while I addressed dodgy chainplates, bent pulpit from her dismasting, and various botched repairs carried out from collision damage. The work continued after we launched her, the seapanther blew up - ended up replacing it with another used example. We also had to lift her out as she started leaking around her keel. I believe this was the result of a grounding accident at the hands of her former owner. and the unique way the keel seems to be attached on these boats. Jeremy Rodgers was very useful and provided lots of diagrams. My main problem appeared to be flexing of the part of the hull between ribs around the front keel bolts. My repairs are based around a foam cruciform and biaxial cloth and epoxy. The backstay chainplate which is shared with the pushpit foot is unsupported (unlike the other chainplates) and was pulling the deck moulding away from the hull. I have glassed in a mini bulkhead and there is now a stainless bar and rigging screw under the deck to take the load down to the hull. I have (very time consuming but well worth the effort) sanded/ bleached , re stained and re varnished the whole interior. The teak has come up like new its quite amazing. I also ripped out the front pipecots which were all oxidised and corroded. then using special lightweight ply, with holes wherever possible, and some canny use of teak veneers have built a lovely warm looking teak clad front cabin. Proper comfy berths, excellent sail stowage (low down where the weight should be) and no bare grp anywhere. The best bit is im so sad I weighed it all and its barely any heavier than the old pipecots!

Main niggle must still be that enormous cockpit locker which despite all my best efforts seems to leak rainwater by the gallon.
